Designing rooftop garden for Westgate, Oxford

The new 800,000 sq ft (74,300 sq. m) Westgate Oxford development includes the city’s first public roof garden, designed by LDA Design. The former Westgate Centre is being redeveloped by the Westgate Oxford Alliance, a joint venture between Land Securities and The Crown Estate, and being transformed into a new fashion and food district for Oxford.

The roof garden has been designed around a kitchen garden concept and creates a series of unique outdoor spaces for 12 bars and restaurants, affording arresting panoramic rooftop views of the Oxford city skyline and the countryside.  A grass ‘quad’ with a retractable canopy will feature as the main area for the public to enjoy the views from.

The £440m shopping and leisure destination will open on 24 October this year, and is already 70% let. Westgate Oxford will be home to more than 100 new stores, 25 restaurants and cafes, a boutique cinema, and a wealth of new public spaces.

Dafydd Warburton, Associate at LDA Design said: “A world-class city needs a public realm to match. The project will create a stunning rooftop public garden for the City with fantastic views of Oxford’s skyline”.

Naomi Howard, Leasing Director at Land Securities said: “The roof top terrace will have breath-taking views over the famous Oxford city skyline making it the perfect setting to enjoy drinks or a meal. Demand to date has been fantastic for both the retail and leisure offer, ensuring that when October comes Westgate Oxford will be a buzzing and vibrant destination to shop and watch the sun set over the city’s famous spires.
