Double Planning Awards success for Swansea Bay
Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon was a big winner at the 2017 Planning Awards, coming away with the top prize in two categories: Infrastructure Planning and Sustainability.
The proposed Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, a world first, will not only provide carbon-free energy but also act as a catalyst for ongoing urban regeneration, opening up an area of waterfront cut off from the public for over a century. The lagoon will have a net annual power output of over 500GWh per annum; enough to meet the annual electricity requirement of over 155,000 homes, or over 90 per cent of homes in the Swansea area.
As masterplanners and lead designers on the project, LDA Design is working with Tidal Lagoon Power (TLP) to help deliver a project that secures significant local benefits, including connections to Swansea University’s new Bay Campus and the University of Wales Trinity St David’s Campus.
The proposal includes a national sailing centre, a new beach and saltwater marsh, and a new visitor centre adjoining the turbines which form part of a new maritime park that extends along the full length of the impounding sea wall and intertidal shore.
“What’s brilliant about this project is that it’s not only about sustainable, next generation energy, which is of course vital. It’s also about creating a wonderful legacy for Swansea and Wales,” commented LDA Design Board Director, Alister Kratt.
“By putting people first we can create infrastructure that works for everyone and that captures the opportunities to secure true place making.”
Alex Herbert, Tidal Lagoon Power’s Head of Consents said: “These awards are testament to the outstanding professional planning work undertaken by our own team in partnership with LDA Design as our master planners. They reinforce what we have always said: this iconic infrastructure project will transform the way in which we meet the UK’s future electricity demand and the relationship between power stations and the communities that host them.”
Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is a pathfinder project securing proof of concept, and forms part of a proposed fleet of lagoons in Wales and across the UK. LDA Design has been working with TLP in developing masterplan concepts. A proposed lagoon in Cardiff will be capable of powering the whole of Wales and again offers extraordinary opportunity for Cardiff’s and the country’s future.
