HLF FUNDING FOR TWO LDA DESIGNED PARKS
30/04/2009

Victoria Park London
Victoria Park in London and Nottingham Forest Recreation Ground won Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) Stage One funding in the latest round of grants to restore, regenerate and enhance parks in the UK. The parks won large amounts of funding following the work that LDA Design undertook with the respective clients.
Victoria Park, considered to be one of the finest East London parks, was granted £295,500. This was the largest grant given in the announcement of fund allocation, for restoration proposals. Historically the park is famous as a forum for political meetings and a number of lively speakers’ corners and, now the park hosts open air music festivals and concerts.
Victoria Park features a Grade II listed drinking fountain and two pedestrian alcoves that survived the demolition of the old London Bridge in 1831. LDA Design’s masterplan includes restoring existing features such as fences, lakes and statues and seeks ways to open it up to new users and future generations.
Our second project to be granted HLF funding, Nottingham Forest Recreation Ground, received £181,500, the fourth greatest sum awarded. Originally part of historic Sherwood Forest, the ‘Parks for People’ funding will enable a £3m scheme to go ahead, which aims to restore this beautiful Victorian park.
Sir Joseph Paxton, a celebrated Victorian gardener and architect, was the original designer of the Forest which consists of two main areas: the southern half has tree covered slopes and tree lined walks while the north is flatter, previously home to a cricket ground and racecourse. The park is also famous for giving Nottingham Forest FC its name – the team used to play here back 1865.
“It’s fantastic to have won such great sums of money for our clients,” said Andrew Harland, partner and head of parks for LDA Design. “The proposals for these parks, once implemented, will not only offer green space for the surrounding communities but will help regenerate the areas too.”
