LDA DESIGN'S WORK COMMENDED BY RTPI
Two of LDA Design's regeneration projects have been commended by the Royal Town Planning Institute. Masterplans for Radstock in Somerset and Torbay in Devon both received recognition in the RTPI South West Planning Achievement Awards 2009.
Since 1992, the RTPI South West Awards have been recognising the diversity of planning achievements for both large scale masterplans through to small scale town enhancements to highlight planning excellence achievements.
LDA Design's scheme for Radstock will bring a new urban structure by improving the road traffic access to the town and enhancing the historic town centre. The masterplan includes a high quality mixed use development built on former derelict railway land.
"We are very pleased to be recognised for our planning work in Radstock," said Alister Kratt, partner at LDA Design. "Our design will help to re-establish the heart of this historic town by introducing a mixed use development which will be a catalyst for regeneration in Radstock's town centre."
The RTPI judges commented: "The task of planning the regeneration of the complex brownfield site (with almost every classic feature present, including significant natural environment issues) and the town centre has been approached in a highly professional manner with local community support."
For Torbay, LDA Design prepared a 20 year vision for the New English Riviera on behalf of the Mayor. It was supported by a development framework identifying new economic development, new infrastructure and the regeneration of the three town centres in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.
Bernie Foulkes, partner LDA Design commented: "We are delighted that this work has been commended. The Mayoral Vision for Torbay should act as a blueprint for how great British seaside resorts position themselves for the future, addressing climate change and bringing prosperity for its citizens."
The judges said: "We are all too aware of other many examples of ‘Visions' that were unrealistic with little or no relationship with the planning process. In this context, we are pleased to receive positive assurances from the Planning Officer that the processes were well integrated and indeed that the public involvement in the evolution and development of the Mayoral Vision had been, and continued to be, beneficial in the preparation of the Local Development Framework."
