In addition to Tom Bliss successfully completing his MA in Landscape Architecture at Leeds Metropolitan University this academic year, he has also scooped a landscape practice sponsored prize for excellence.
The prize was presented to mature student Tom, at the graduation ceremony for the Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design, at Leeds Metropolitan University on 19 July by landscape architect Chris Arscott, representing LDA Design, one of the UK's leading environmental and design companies.
For his final project Tom produced a documentary film that has been positively received across a wide audience and highly praised by examiners at Leeds. His film, ‘The Urbal Fix', highlights the significance and urgency of addressing environmental issues posed by climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels.
The LDA Design Prize for Excellence in Landscape Design is awarded every year to a select number of students across the UK, Tom was chosen by lecturers at the university due to his innovative film that he created for his final project.
Andrew Harland, partner LDA Design explained: "It's important to recognise talented landscape architects coming out of British universities.
At a time when climate change and sustainable regeneration are high on the government's agenda we should ensure that there are plenty of incentives to transform those degrees into careers that can really make a difference to improving people's lives and the world around us."
Tom Bliss said: "I'm delighted to have won the prize because LDA Design is an innovative practice that influenced my thinking behind my film. I am now lobbying for the establishment of a new think tank, the Urbal Institute which I hope will bring ideas such as permaculture, urban food production, co-operative housing and steady state economics further into the mainstream."
