LDA DESIGN'S OLYMPIC WORK WINS TOP AWARD
The Landscape Institute has again recognised LDA Design. Firstly, as part of the team working on the London 2012 Olympic Park by awarding the project the prestigious Peter Youngman award for outstanding contribution to landscape.
In addition the practice, a leading UK design and environmental consultancy, received commendations for its work in landscape management and local landscape planning and for one of its graduate landscape architects, Marta Puig de la Bellacasa Bellas, who received an award for her university work.
The Awards were presented by Jonathan Porritt, the former chair of the Sustainable Development Commission and renowned environmental campaigner, at the annual ceremony at the Brewery, London.
The president of the Landscape Institute said:"The focus of the London 2012 Games will be the Olympic Park in east London, which will house the new sports venues. The Olympic Park is located in the Lower Lea Valley - an area of great untapped potential. After the Games the area will be transformed into one of the largest urban parks created in Europe for more than 150 years. The determination to ensure that the most lasting legacy of the Olympics should not only be beautiful new buildings but a beautiful new park at its heart, setting the context for a new piece of city has led to the decision to make the award this year to the Olympic Delivery Authority which is responsible for commissioning the Olympic Park, one of the most significant landscape-led regeneration projects in the UK."
The judges commented:"This masterplan is visionary and innovative at the same time it is deliverable, and the landscape, which will become one of the most visible landscapes in the world for a short time, will be robust and contribute to the art and science of landscape architecture."
"It's an honour to be recognised for our continued work and achievements," said Professor Robert Tregay, senior partner at LDA Design. "We design schemes to mitigate for and adapt to climate change and it's extra special when the person presenting the awards really does understand the work we do to address the challenges that we will face in the future.
"Every year the Landscape Institute awards get more competitive and I'm delighted that the practice has continued to pick up awards in a diversity of categories. To be a part of the team that won the Peter Youngman award is the icing on the cake."
This year's result brings the LDA Design Landscape Institute Award tally to 20, including the first President's Award in 1993 for Cambridgeshire Landscape Guidelines, which are still used in the county today.
