Masterplan aims to transform edge of Exeter

25/08/2009

A new masterplan is being prepared to help deliver the residential and economic development required in Exeter by the emerging South West Regional Spatial Strategy.

The Monkerton-Hill Barton area on the eastern edge of Exeter is fragmented and LDA Design, a leading UK design and environment consultancy, has been appointed by Exeter City Council, Devon County Council, the Exeter and Devon Growth Point Team, the Highways Agency, Hill Barton Consortium, Barratt Homes and Hill Barton Developments to provide guidance on the development of the area as a mixed use sustainable urban extension.

The proposals will bring together the existing diverse developments into a cohesive edge to the city with a mix of uses that serves surrounding and new residents. A clear vision and set of objectives will be established by the masterplan to develop a framework for growth that includes housing, employment, local shops, community facilities, green infrastructure and excellent public transport links.

Frazer Osment, partner of LDA Design said: "We have already held two visioning events with stakeholders and landowners and we are excited by the vision and aspirations that are starting to emerge. The Monkerton-Hill Barton area has the potential to deliver a strongly defined and distinctive new eastern edge to Exeter and create a new community that takes an innovative approach to sustainable living and working."

"This masterplan will help to regenerate Monkerton by attracting new investment and addressing housing demand," added Councillor Peter Wadham, portfolio holder for sustainable development and transport, Exeter City Council. "LDA Design has a proven track record in such schemes and we are looking forward to developing the vision with them to deliver a well designed and viable community in this part of Exeter appropriate for Devon's capital city."

LDA Design is being supported by Parsons Brinckerhoff, GVA Grimley and Gardiner and Theobald in preparing the masterplan.
