New Vision for Hull Park

11/11/2009

Detailed designs for the initial phase for the regeneration of Hull's historic West Park have been submitted for planning permission by Hull Gateway. The scheme is a part of a wider £400 million regeneration of Newington and St. Andrews in west Hull.

LDA Design, a leading UK design and environment business, was appointed as lead designer by Hull Gateway to begin the estimated £7m revitalisation of West Park. Collaborating with sub-consultant artist Jason Bruges Studio, key elements have been designed for the first phase, the £1.4m project to redesign the main Anlaby Road entrance. New artworks will be installed in the entrance square, to give the nearby listed Carnegie library building an enhanced setting. Two axial paths will connect the park gateway with Hull City's Kingston Communications football stadium, which is located within West Park.

New sculptural piers, with digital impressions of the original entrance features, acknowledge the late C19th entrance design. The piers will be at the threshold of a new patterned floorscape, which incorporates a paving design inspired by the mosaic art nouveau frieze in the ‘Arts & Crafts' Carnegie library entrance rotunda. Other features that define the entrance space include a sculptural CorTen leaf patterned ‘hedge' and English romantic woven ‘fence'.

Garry Taylor, West Hull Programme Manager, said: "The quality of the proposals highlight just how important West Park is to the local community and to the city as a whole."

"We are pleased to play a part in the exciting transformation of West Park," added Bernie Foulkes, partner and project leader at LDA Design. "We have striven to incorporate the historic background of the park in many of the detailed design elements, which will give West Park a contemporary and striking entrance without forgetting its heritage."

Pending approval, the first stage of work is expected to begin early next year, to be completed by summer 2010.
