WORLD CLASS DESIGN TEAM TO TRANSFORM WEST HULL

1/06/2009

A team of world class urban designers and artists have been appointed by Gateway, Hull's neighbourhood regeneration agency, to reinvigorate Newington and St. Andrew's, west Hull.

All new developments including plans for 2,000 new homes, revitalised parks and shopping areas and a public square on Anlaby Road, will feature eye-catching design features and exciting public art that will transform the face of this historic community.

Exeter based LDA Design will lead the work to place innovative and inspirational design at the forefront of Gateway's £400 million regeneration plan for the area.Founded in 1979, LDA Design is one of the leading urban design, landscape architecture and architecture practices in the UK, with a track record that includes the regeneration of Millbay Docks in Plymouth, the transformation of Blackpool's famous seafront and the Olympic Park masterplan for London 2012.

In addition to developing and delivering a major programme of improvements for West Park, they will also work alongside Hull's architecture centre, arc, to co-ordinate the work of a four-strong team of artists, who will each focus on one individual scheme within Newington and St. Andrew's.

London based Jason Bruges Studio, whose founder trained with world-leading architects Foster and Partners will transform West Park through dramatic and interactive lighting displays. Previous work includes the sensational '25 Live' George Michael World Tour in 2006 and the innovative, interactive Leicester Lights project where the colours of street lighting change according to local traffic and pedestrian flow.

Chris Tippingwill focus on integrating art into the design of housing and open space on the Amy Johnson development, where over 600 new and contemporary eco-homes will be built over the next 10 years. Chris is a graduate of the Royal College of Art whose most recent work includes the spectacular 'Rossby Diptych', a cast concrete feature for the corporate headquarters of Carnival UK Ltd, in Southampton.

Martin Heron has been appointed to improve the look and feel of Anlaby Road, which is set to see a major transformation with the new public square, revitalised leisure and shopping area and refurbished Victorian homes. Previous projects from the East Midlands based artist include 'Where do dreams go', a 2.5m bronze pig engraved with Celtic scroll work in Northern Ireland and 'Handstand' in Ispwich, which symbolises the aspirations of a community and depicts what can be achieved by working together.

Brighton based Bruce Williams will take on the role of revitalising Hessle Road by using materials such as laser cut steel to create a series of 3D photographic structures. Examples of his previous work include 'Droplet' in Portsmouth and 'Rotherwas Women' in Hereford which combines robust materials with images of local people.

Local people will be involved throughout 2009, and will work alongside Gateway, the design team and lead developer Keepmoat to create the designs for the four areas in Newington and St Andrew's. Work is expected to start on the first schemes in early 2010.

Bernie Foulkes, Partner at LDA Design said: "We recognise that the role of lead designer in Newington and St Andrew's is a once in a lifetime opportunity to bring new life and vitality into these neighbourhoods. We are really looking forward to developing the master plan for the area and also the individual projects in partnership with Gateway and the local community."

Chris Hilton, Development Director at Gateway said: "We have appointed a team of outstanding urban designers and artists who are well equipped to further transform Newington and St Andrew's. The aim of their work is to instill a sense of quality and pride in the area."

Cllr Rick Welton, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration at Hull City Council said: "Hull can be very proud of its heritage of exceptional architecture. The regeneration of Newington and St Andrew's will draw inspiration from this and from the city's long-standing affinity with art, artists and high-quality design. By embedding this into every aspect of the regeneration, the aim is to create a distinctive neighbourhood where people will choose to live and that local people can be proud of."
