Northala Fields: A landmark park from recycled material

Northala Fields proves creative design can be economically and environmentally beneficial. Inert landfill waste from major nearby developments was imported for the park’s centrepiece: four eye-catching conical mounds.

A design competition created the initial concept: art from land. As landscape architect we developed the concept and carried out detailed design and delivery.

Sustainable design and construction methods featured throughout: recycled materials included timber, plastics, concrete and bricks. By blending site-won materials with crushed import, different growing media were designed to support ecologically diverse wildflower meadows, grassland and woodland.

The park includes an amphitheatre with hand-carved seating, boating and fishing lakes, play areas, walkways and cycleways.
