Masterplan for the Great Fen: Re-Imagining a Fenland Landscape
The Fens were England’s greatest wetlands. Now drained, they are farmed exhaustively. LDA Design has created a masterplan to restore natural wetland and low-intensity farming, while protecting and enhancing natural environments; creating accessible environments for education and recreation; developing the local economy; and contributing to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Our masterplan creates jobs and a major carbon sink, absorbing 320,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. It enables the growth of biomass crops, floodwater attenuation, and the protection of habitats and species while also involving communities and attracting visitors. We have restored a natural balance which includes productive agriculture and space for people.
