Network Rail National Lineside Vegetation Management Strategy
Network Rail commissioned a multidisciplinary team led by LDA Design to prepare a strategic and long-term management strategy for the UK rail network.
The size of the Network Rail Estate is considerable, stretching in extent over approximately 10,000 route miles with an estimated land area of 380 square kilometres – roughly equivalent to the area of the Isle of Wight. This is an extensive environmental asset with mixed ecological value and significant potential. The primary aim of the strategy is to transform this existing landscape which is a costly management liability into a fully-functioning environmental and ecological asset capable of delivering a range of ecosystem services. Simply put, the strategy seeks to put the lineside estate back to work.
