Proposals unveiled for Union Terrace Gardens

Our design proposals for the £20 million regeneration of Union Terrace Gardens have been unveiled and welcomed by Aberdeen’s city council leader.

LDA Design is proposing to enhance the Gardens and the Denburn Valley as a place to relax and enjoy. Access will be easier and the Gardens will feel safer with new lighting and new facilities including a café and gallery space.

Councillor Jenny Laing says the new designs respect the unique character of the Gardens at the same time as making the space more usable. The proposals have been described as imaginative by the deputy council leader Marie Boulton, who chairs the city centre’s regeneration board.

Existing heritage is enhanced, including reinstating the ‘grand staircase’ into the gardens from Rosemount Viaduct.

Kirstin Taylor, Project Director at LDA Design, says: “Our aim is to make the Gardens everyone’s favourite all-year-round destination.” The completion target date is Autumn 2019.
