South Kilburn’s ‘Green Streets’ masterplan up for New London Award
A scheme to transform South Kilburn, part of a major regeneration programme, has been shortlisted for this year’s New London Awards 2017.
LDA Design has worked alongside Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) and Brent Council (South Kilburn Estate Regeneration Team) to develop a 2005 masterplan, providing a more sustainable approach to creating a sociable new neighbourhood where people feel like they belong, as well as a community which is fully integrated into the wider area.
In line for the Masterplan and Areas Strategies award, the plan enables Brent Council to create around 2,400 high-quality and much-needed new homes, half of which will be available for existing secure tenants of South Kilburn.
“We connect people and place through landscape and we’ve used this as a driver for the overall masterplan,” explains LDA Design Project Director, Benjamin Walker.
“Critically, by taking this approach and through extensive consultation with local people, we’ve been able to create a well-connected new neighbourhood that’s stitched in and very much part of the wider context. The plan also promotes pedestrian-priority streets and increases the allocation given over to parks and public open spaces.”
The scheme offers new retail, a new school for primary age provision, a community enterprise hub and a modern health centre, underpinned by new high-quality parks and public realm and vastly improved streets.
It also includes ‘green streets’ with an abundance of street trees, biodiverse planting and sustainable urban drainage. This green network, combined with more walkable spaces, will create a more attractive, social place, creating a heightened sense of community and local ownership and boosting further investment in the area.
The NLA New London Awards are announced on Wednesday 5 July 2017.
