Over 40 delegates joined LDA Design’s Frazer Osment at a recent Garden Villages breakfast briefing in Oxford led by Lord Taylor of Goss Moor who was instrumental in developing the government’s garden villages policy.
England’s first ever garden towns and villages have the potential to transform housing design and delivery in the UK. Much rests on their success.
Ahead of a lively discussion, Frazer set out five key steps to developing successful garden communities and to avoid ending up with lifeless dormitory housing estates. Explaining LDA Design’s vision, he said:
“Delivering garden communities requires a distinctively different development model that promises much. But only if we get the approach right – which means building homes without sacrificing on quality and working in partnership with the public and private sector to ensure delivery.
“If we follow these five steps – from finding a location with the potential to become a remarkable and self-contained place to defining and communicating the benefits to local people – we will create welcoming, enterprising places where people can thrive.”
LDA Design is working on a number of new garden developments, including Waterbeach in Cambridge, Welborne in Hampshire and Fairoaks in Surrey.
