LDA Design has revealed early visioning for Great Ormond Street in London.
Working with the team at Great Ormond Street Hospital, LDA has developed a concept proposal that would turn a heavily polluted street which frequently exceeds WHO standards into a safe, child friendly, healthy green place to be – a best-in-class example of city transformation.
The aim is to draw on biophilic design to create a playable, restorative, sociable and inclusive place for the patients of Great Ormond Street Hospital, their families, NHS staff and the local community. The transformation would include the space outside the new Children’s Cancer Centre by BDP and neighbouring Queen Square.
“This inspiring vision is the start of a journey for Great Ormond Street that could set a UK-standard for healthy urban green streets. Every street feeding into our city hospitals could look like this,” explains Scott Carroll, a director at LDA Design and project lead for Great Ormond Street.
“Easy access would still need to be maintained, but in partnership with GOSH, and with support from Camden Council, we have drawn on our experience of city centre transformations to address urgent issues such as air pollution and isolation. It’s early days, but we are very excited to see the next steps.”
